Namorok Timothy Dumoo - Nardirri Beach, 2024

$710.00
Acrylic on Canvas
53 x 80 cm

'Long time ago in the old days, old people lived on the beach near the Moyle River. They called it Nardirri. It was a good place to hunt fish and crabs, lots of birds flying over, geese and ducks. We only had sticks and spears to hunt. We found fresh water under the sand or in the bush near the beach. We always hunted for our food in the saltwater, the salt plane plain just behind the beach, jungle and bush. A lot of people came from other bushlands to go hunting at Nardirri beach. A lot of families were chased away and made to swim back or hold a log through the river. Others were good, the Dumoos and Beridas would let them stay and hunt for tucker along the river and in the bush nearby. After a good day of hunting, they would cook their fish and crabs, we would let the kids from other families eat. (see picture little boy holding a fish dancing). Later the old men and old women would invite them to stay after a good hunting day. The old men would bring the didgeridoo and clap sticks and they would start singing, making up songs about the good hunting day. Everyone was happy. Later the Dumoos would let them stay for good.' Acrylic paint on unstretched canvas (frame is not included).
